Rigid-Flex

Rigid-flex PCBs combine the advantages of flexible and rigid printed circuit boards and can take the function of several rigid boards that are interconnected with cables and connectors. The omission of cables and connectors increases the reliability substantially and is inevitable in high reliability applications.

Rigid-flex PCBs can be populated similar to rigid PCBs provided they are delivered in a frame. After assembly break out taps are cut through and the board separated from the frame.

Although rigid-flex PCBs do carry a higher cost than rigid PCBs it is often often the more economical solution. Cost savings are realized by a lower number of components and lower assembly cost. In addition the reliability of the final product will be increased as well.

The design of rigid-flex PCBs requires special experience and special care must be taken prior to assembly to avoid delaminations. Please do not hesitate to contact us for assistance in the early stages of your design cycle.

6-layer rigid-flex PCB for an implantable device

An implant demands high reliability and the limited space has to be used in an optimal way. The flexible areas of the populated PCB can be bent to achieve a space saving 3D assembly.

Rigid-flex PCB in bookbinder technology for military application

This PCB is subject to high vibrations and the flexible areas are required to bend in a small radius even with four layers. To achieve the requirement of the high flexibility, the four layers are dived into two separate packages. This technique is known as bookbinder technology.

16-layer rigid-flex for medical application

The high packing density with lots of BGAs requires a highly integrated printed circuit board with 16 layers and buried as well as blind vias. The numerous signals from the sensors are transmitted through 6 flex layers. In order to keep the 6-layer flex areas flexible bookbinder and window technology was used. This PCB measures 168 x 91 x 2.1 mm.
